What is defensive driving?

When it comes to car accidents, drivers in New Jersey must play it safe. This entails following all traffic laws, removing distractions from their vehicles, and treating other motorists with respect. These are defensive driving behaviors and Esurance explains how to incorporate them into your life.

Keep your distance

Part of being a defensive driver is being alert to the behavior of other motorists. If you notice a driver is behaving erratically, such as swerving or weaving in and out of traffic, your best bet is to keep your distance. Even under normal circumstances, you should maintain a safe distance between your vehicles, which will help if the car in front of you slams on its brakes unexpectedly.

Prevent distractions

Distracted driving entails more than using your mobile device behind the wheel. It can also be talking with your passengers, eating and driving or even daydreaming. Your mind should be on the task at hand at all times, no matter what is going around you. When it comes to your phone, make sure it’s stored out of reach and turned off while driving to prevent you from using it. If you must use it, pull over in a safe area out of the way of other vehicles.

Be positive

It can be easy to let the actions of other drivers anger you. Doing so will only lead to more issues however, especially if you respond aggressively. Instead, try your best to maintain a positive and calm attitude when behind the wheel. Don’t immediately assume another driver is behaving maliciously and don’t react with anger when cut off or another vehicle prevents you from merging.
