New Jersey man accused of DWI and leaving accident scene

Police have charged a Middletown man with several offenses related to a hit-and-run accident that occurred on March 15. The charges include reckless driving, leaving an accident scene, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving on a suspended licence and DWI. According to the Holmdel Police Department, a Pontiac Grand Prix was spotted just before 1 a.m. in the Dearborn Farms parking lot at the intersection of Centerville Road and Highway 35. The vehicle appeared to have heavy damage on its left side. As an officer on patrol approached the car to talk to the 33-year-old driver, he reportedly smelled alcohol coming from the man.

The officer administered sobriety tests and subsequently took the driver into custody. Following an investigation, police say that the driver was heading south on the highway when he lost control of his car and hit a natural gas marker pipe. The incident allegedly happened just before the patrolman spotted the vehicle.

After transporting and processing him at police headquarters, the officers found that the man has two warrants for his detainment in Hazlet and Middletown. He was subsequently released into the custody of Middletown Police Department officers for additional processing.

The consequences of being convicted of impaired driving charges could be detrimental to the careers and personal lives of defendants. The sentences often increase in severity with multiple convictions. However, sometimes people appear drunk when they are not. Diabetics, for instance, may look and act like they are drunk when their sugar becomes low. There are also medications, prescriptions as well as over-the-counter, that could make a person look and act this way and cause breath tests to give false positives. When these situations occur, those who have been charged might get help from a criminal defense attorney in collecting evidence to dispute the claims.
