Mayor of a city in New Jersey charged with DUI

On Behalf of | Dec 9, 2014 | Drunk Driving |

According to police, the mayor of Lambertville was detained in November on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. The 58-year-old mayor allegedly consumed alcohol before driving on Route 130 on Nov. 9 and was stopped by Lambertville law enforcement officials shortly after 1 a.m.

Police reportedly conducted an investigation during the traffic stop and took the mayor into custody after performing poorly in field sobriety tests. An attorney representing the mayor later said that two Breathalyzer tests administered at police headquarters demonstrated that the mayor did not have any alcohol in his system. However, the mayor was charged with DUI as well as failing to maintain a lane and reckless driving, authorities said.

Being pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving may be terrifying for some drivers, especially individuals who have health conditions. Sometimes, extreme fatigue can distort an individual’s appearance to the point that a police officer might mistake that individual for being impaired. Drivers who experience this condition may not be able to perform field sobriety tests to the police’s satisfaction, leading to mistaken DUI charges.

Drivers accused of impaired driving may hire a defense attorney to guide them in obtaining the appropriate documents, materials and evidence that demonstrate their innocence and to articulate their case in a cogent fashion. In this way, wrongly accused individuals may see their charges dismissed.

It is also important for the defense attorney to scrutinize both the police records related to the DUI stop and the actions of the detaining officers. If there is evidence that the accused individual’s rights had been violated, this too may be grounds for the DUI charges to be dismissed.
