Westfield Municipal Court

The Westfield Municipal Court presides over non-indictable offenses committed in Westfield, New Jersey. The most common offenses heard before the court include Traffic Violations, with the disorderly persons offense such as Possession of Less than 50 grams of Marijuana, Criminal Mischief, Lewd Conduct, Bad Checks, Simple Assault, and Resisting Arrest. The upside to a Municipal case is that the maximum penalty that can be imposed is up to 6 months in prison and fines. While this can greatly relieve the stress of a trial, it is important not to underestimate the degree of interference a conviction can have on your life. For example, take a look at the effects of a conviction of Driving without Insurance.

Driving without Insurance

This may seem like a harmless offense, especially if your intentions were good and you had an honest and good faith belief that your vehicle was insured. Unfortunately, a good faith belief of insurance is not enough to defend a charge of Driving without Insurance, and if you are convicted, the penalties are severe. The penalties for Driving without Insurance in New Jersey include over $1,000 in fines, community service, and loss of license for one year. The one year license suspension is automatic upon conviction, and is just one example of how minor offenses can greatly affect your life if you lack the legal representation required to properly defend a charge.
