Plea Bargains in New Jersey

New Jersey Plea Bargain Lawyer

Union County Plea Agreement Attorney

New Jersey Criminal Defense Lawyer for Plea Bargains
Union - Monmouth - Hudson - Essex County NJ

At Palumbo & Renaud, I do everything in my power to obtain the best possible resolution for my clients. Depending on the facts of each case, different avenues of relief may be available. Sometimes an attorney should defend a charge at trial, and other times, an outcome will be far superior if a plea bargain is reached. Only an experienced attorney will know when it's best to fight or negotiate. Making this decision takes years of working cases on both sides of the law, knowing the opposition, and understanding the judge's expectations. As a former county and municipal court prosecutor, I know first hand how the prosecution works. I personally have been resolving cases for over thirty-five (35) years, and I know how to make the right move toward the best possible outcome in your case. I defend individuals throughout New Jersey in Middlesex County, Essex County, and Union County including Elizabeth, Cranford, Linden, Westfield, Clark, Rahway, Roselle, Roselle Park, Plainfield, Mountainside, Scotch Plains, and Garwood.

New Jersey Plea bargains

A plea bargain is an agreement between the defense and prosecution in which the defendant agrees to certain consequences in exchange for reduced charges or reduced penalties. As bargaining chips, the defendant's attorney will use the strong aspects of the defendant's case to obtain a lesser charge. For example, if the defendant is a first time offender, or a stand up citizen, these facts may be used to negotiate for lesser charges. Another example might be if the defendant's rights were violated, but it is not likely that the violations will result in acquittal. In such a case, the defense may use the violation as a bargaining tool to negotiate for lesser penalties.

Trial vs. Plea Bargain

Only an experienced attorney can make the right decision as to whether a defendant will be best served by a trial or a plea bargain that is why it is so important to have an experienced lawyer by your side. Additionally, the client must agree to negotiate. Not everyone wants to negotiate, especially those who feel they are innocent and want their day in court, or those for whom a plea will result in serious consequences like deportation. The upside of plea bargaining is that it's an easy and efficient way to resolve a case with minimum stress for the defendant.

Plea bargains should be considered in the following areas:
